Indeed - some of the best beer bars in the USA have no to minimal food on offer as well: the Toronado in San Francisco, the Map Room and the Clark Street Ale House in Chicago, Spuyten Duyvel in Brooklyn-NYC, Stumbling Monk and Beveridge Place Pub in Seattle, Bailey's Taproom in Portland (OR), and on it goes. Amsterdam's original Gollem café (there are now three of them!) was and still is mostly food-free, and there are only a few beer-friendly snacks on at De Wildeman. Café Délirium in Brussels has snacks of cheese, sausage, and crisps, and the original Moeder Lambic also has similarly minimal food on offer. There are plenty of examples elsewhere, and yes, even in food-and-beer-rich Franconia, you'll still find places where food is an afterthought, if it's on at all. Brauerei Hertlein in Staffelbach usually doesn't make much of a big deal about food (maybe at Sunday lunchtimes?), and you don't go into Bamberg's Torschuster with high expectations for food either. I like having the option of food with beer more often than not, but realize that there are times when there are places worth going to for a drink where food is primarily a bring-your-own affair. My local (mentioned above) has a policy of bring-your-own on food, and even keeps menu notebooks handy, for deliveries from local places, should one's appetite be stimulated by the excellent selection of beers. Who needs an on-premises kitchen when a quick phone call gets your choice of Indian, Chinese, Greek, or Italian food delivered to your table from restaurants just a short distance away?
