Pity granted - guess most people in UK feel the same about US-sports, such as baseball and American football. Mind you, if you think that Manchester is all great beer, a pre-match session in the pubs adjacent to City's ground is an eye-opener: the worst keg beer you can imagine squirted under pressure, six at a time, into cardboard pint 'glasses'. Absolutely appalling. Much the same goes for the stuff sold in football grounds, where the pressure is to sell as much as possible in the least permissible time, for the maximum amount (c.£3.00/pint). I can hardly act as an advocate for Manchester, having abandoned the place 40 years ago. To be honest, it now seems much the same as any other large metropolis and I don't really recognise it as the town that I grew up in, though there are a few good pubs still left. You're right about the surrounding towns, although many of them are pretty dull, to say the least. I have paternal roots in Wales but not sure that I would really like to live there. If we were to come back to UK (more chance of moving to Germany!), I would opt for the Welsh/English border area - Shropshire/Hereford - ish.
