I have read in the German Wikipedia. Schlot means the great chimneys of industrial buildings and power houses. It is a abbreviated version of "Fabrikschlot" (chimneys of factories). Insofar is Schornstein a topic, Schlot a special kind of chimney. There is a discussion in Wikipedia about this - without a conclusion. "Schlot" (as "Slot") comes from the northern part of Germany. In the south of Germany and in Austria the most people say: "Kamin". In Germany they say too: "Rauchen wie ein Schlot" about someone who is smoking like a chimney, permanently. |
