Franconian Beer Message Board

Happy to steer the discussion away from Vegetarian food...

Me too! I had the same ambition for my visit in September but found two problems. First, and this has been mentioned before, always check the 'ruhetag' for any visit. We went all the way to Merkendorf (actually walked uphill on a very hot day from Memmelsdorf) to find both Hummel and Wagner shut, when they shouldn't have been! Second problem, as DonS says, is the question of transport. Yes, Bamberg area has a pretty good public transport system (fantastic compared to my homeplace) but it tends to close down fairly early. For example, the last bus to Dorfleins is about 18.30 and there is nothing coming back, apart form the bus you go on. Otherwise, it's a 3 km walk to Hallstadt bahnhof. I spent many frustrating hours studying timetables, trying to work out connections, often finding that there was only one bus or that the return bus was the one that I came on, etc. A lot of rural places can be reached by public transport but take care! But, assuming that you have transport, I would recomend a visit to Eichorn in Dorfleins. Check the weird opening hours but early evenings Saturday (closes at 20.00) is good and atmospheric with loads of card games going on. Think they play Schafshof, which I can't understand at all (anyone like to explain?). Try to take in the Goldene Lowen in Hallstadt. This is a wonderful antique pub (read the late John White's review on his website) and Mrs. Diller is a wonderfully courteous and friendly hostess (you have to speak German but, if you don't, go anyway). It also gives you the opportunity to drink the lovely beer from Brauerei Tiefenellern, without going all the way to the place itself. Don't miss the opportunity, Goldene Lowen may not be with us for much longer! I would seriously recomend Brauerei Beck in Trabelsdorf (no public transport - thanks Don and Cherie). Andreas is a most friendly host and his 'homage to Eschawo' Zoigl is excellent, plus good food (even for a veggie!) at very reasonable prices. I think that Andrea's part of Beck is only open on Tuesday, so check first. We were quite fond of Brauerei Mainlust in Viereth and wish we'd have stayed longer, as also Brauerei Hertlein in Staffelbach (just one seidla of Vollbier!). Wagner-Brau in Kemmern is highly recommended and is a really down to earth bar, with excellent lagerbier and a very tasty schwarz bier. The two Memmelsdorf hotels are worth a visit, having good beer, but they are a little bit upmarket for my taste. The same could be said for Hartmann in Wurgau but that is a most friendly and accomodating place.
