Yeah you can use wine bottles, as long as they're properly sanitized including the cap. I'm not sure if you'd be better off with corks though. Something to consider. Bottles of homebrew used to explode back in the day because of the type of yeast used and the amount of sugar. I think we've all heard a story about how Uncle so and so used to brew beer and the bottles used to explode. Well Uncle so and so probably didn't have access to real ale or lager yeast and probably also used a lot of sugar. The only time I've had a bottle of any kind of home concoction explode on me was the one time I made mead and used a champagne yeast. I laid the bottles in a wine rack and the corks ricocheted off the wall on the other side of the room. I've never had a homebrewed beer bottle explode on me. Still I've switched to kegging as it's much more convenient. Good luck. Glad to hear there's some homebrewing going on in West Clare. It's a beautiful part of Ireland. I used to visit almost every year before I got hooked on Franconia. |
