I have to disagree -- what you are doing with the judging is determining which beer is closest to a set of arbitrary (but hopefully grounded in reality) set of style guidelines. When I've judged, usually the "best" beer won but not always. In the system most commonly used for homebrewers in the US (BJCP) 3 points out of 50 are assigned to color. In reality though, a beer too light or too dark will be penalized much more than 3 points. I am of a very strong opinion that homebrewing style guidelines should *never* be applied to commercial beer. Homebrewers should be designing and brewing a beer to meet the guidelines (and thus showing their skill) but most decide which category it best fits after it is brewed.
