There used to be a Kaiserdom Stuben on Wilhemplatz -- I haven't been there in years (I sort of ignore Kaiserdom signs :) ) so I'm not 100% it is still there. If you start on Lange Strasse and head towards Wunderburg (Mahrs, Keesmann) just a bit before you reach the Marienbrücke is Wilhelmplatz. I think there is a hotel there as well. At one point this was more or less their taproom in town. I'm told Kaiserdom sells most of their beer outside of Franconia. They also have a large business with non-alcoholic beer they export to the Middle East. It's not real popular with the locals -- partly due to its size and partly, I'm sure, because Gaustadt is not (in their minds) not really part of Bamberg as it was only annexed in 1972. Kaiserdom was the first Bamberg brewery I had ever heard of. For years they had the only rauchbier you could buy in the Los Angeles area. I later learned from talking to Matthias Trum that it actually was Schlenkerla that they bought in bulk and bottled. It was nasty stuff -- I assume it was years and years old -- and it's lucky I would ever even try a rauchbier after tasting it. When we finally started getting Schlenkerla it was much better -- though as I know still way to old. |
