The area around Windischeschenbach is largely rural, dotted with farms, forests, and small cities, towns, and villages. Most of the tourist promotion for the region emphasizes outdoorsy activities, like hiking and biking in the good-weather seasons. If you're a science-and-geology geek, you might find the site of the Kontinentale Tiefbohrung (Continental Deep-Drilling) project interesting to visit. Some other towns in the region are easily reached by the local train services, like Weiden in der Oberpfalz to the south, and worth a look, and of course, there's more beer. There are a few other Zoigl towns in the region, but Windischeschenbach and neighboring Neuhaus are the most reliable in terms of finding someplace to actually have some Zoigl; others can be a bit more random. See http://www.zoiglinfo.de/pdf/Zoiglkalender_Internet.pdf to get an idea of what's open and what's not on any given weekend. Also, see http://www.zoiglinfo.de/pdf/Zoiglwirte_Internet.pdf for a good general guide. Some towns aren't on the rail line, so either you get to plan some good healthy bike riding, or you drive there, park it, make sure you have a place to stay for the evening, and visit the local Zoiglschänke there. And if you get a bit antsy of the course of a couple of weeks, the train will take you down to Regensburg, a nice enough old city for wandering about. If you're a German history-and-culture buff, public transport will take you east of Regensburg to Donaustauf's Walhalla memorial. Or use the trains (you'll need to at least once, maybe twice) to go to Sulzbach-Rosenberg, a pretty town worth a visit, with a couple of local breweries to help keep you properly fortified, or, with a little planning, the Vogtland and Arriva services could take you Cheb in the Czech Republic, another pretty city with a few small brewing venues (brewpubs, actually) to help slake your thirst. There are plenty of other interesting options as well. |
