A typical 20cl pub Kölsch in Malzmühle is €1.45, rather lower than that €3 figure, innit? Two of those is €2.90, yes, but that's for a "Prussian" pint, more than just a couple of mouthfuls. And however much foam is in the glass, I've always found the beer to hover right around the 2cl mark, as the glasses are oversized. But you're right, vast stretches of Germany are pretty dull where beer-drinking is concerned. Too much of the "choice" in many parts Rheinland-Pfalz (and some of nearby Westfalia) consists of Bitburger, Bitburger, and more Bitburger Pils. There are pockets where it's a bit better, like anywhere, but those have to be sought out. If you want to visit a German-speaking country where some very interesting beers are being made, head southeast to Austria. Vienna has some interesting brewpubs, and one brewery-pub in Kalsdorf, south of Graz, has some of the best small-batch beer you'll find anywhere. For whatever reason, Austria doesn't seem to be as thoroughly mired in "tradition" as Germany is these days. |
