| Thanks very much for your very helpful reply. I figured it was a given that my fellow travelers and I would visit the breweries in Bamberg and Regensburg so I didn't want to make an already looong post longer by saying so. Actually we've all been to Bamberg at least twice (some of us several times) and have sampled beers from all the breweries there. I'm afraid I've revealed my ignorance by suggesting that we'd be primarily looking for ales in Franconia. A more knowledgeable friend has read my post and pointed out to me that most of the beers brewed in the region we’ll be travelling through are going to be lagers and that I would have been more accurate to say that we are a group who favor flavors reminiscent of yeast and malt as opposed to hops. Being the novice beer person that I am I assumed the lager method of brewing was responsible for the taste and feel issues we have with Pilsner beers. My friend tells me that I can’t generalize that way. Apparently Kolsch style beers (a style I really don’t care for) are ales and Rauchbiers, Marzens and Bocks, all beer styles I dearly love, are lagers (I would have bet money they were ales). So there you have it, I’m an idiot. Still though, I’m an idiot who’s trying hard to put together the best trip he can for a group of close friends who all enjoy drinking German beer of one style or another (just not dry, crisp, pale, hoppy beers). So, ignoring the ignorant choice of words in my previous post, is there anyone here who perhaps has a pallet similar to my group’s who might be willing to comment on our proposed itinerary? I guess if you’re someone who really favors crisp, hoppy beers your advice may be contrary to our objective but, if you prefer yeasty, malty, fruity, etc. beers and know the region / breweries you could really help us out. |
