I'd suggest thinking about actually doing it, rather than *maybe* doing it. Seriously, yes, you can certainly be arrested--or cited, at least--for drunk biking. The legally acceptable BAC limit for biking is double that for driving though: 1.6 pro mille. And you'd have to be quite drunk, I think, to come to the attention of the Polizei, who have better things to do than looking for betrunkene Radfahrer, like randomly stopping auto drivers for BAC tests. AFA riding on roads or paths go. I think the only way I can describe biking in Franken is: This is a very old country, and there are countless roads and paths through the country and woods. Cars can appear on practically any of them, since people need to drive around to remote places. But yes, one can avoid driving on busy roads and highways pretty easily. And there are many dedicated bike routes, and many of these are even paved. But in Bamberg itself, or getting out of Bamberg, one must sometimes ride on the street. Remember though, most car drivers here also ride bicycles themselves, and so they tolerate and accommodate bikes on the street, unlike in the US (my only personal frame of reference). I used to bike when I lived in a couple of small, bike-friendly uni- cities in the US. I would never consider biking around the countryside from town to town in the US like I do here though. What does worry me about biking on roads here are drunken, jet-lagged tourists driving rental cars around from one village brewery to the next, without regard for the rights of bicyclists on the road. (But that's just paranoid thinking.) The routes to places like Geisfeld and the Kreuzberg are quite safe and enjoyable. The former is nearly exclusively on a paved bike way, the latter is on quiet side roads after Eggolsheim. A big benefit: The beer tastes and feels much better after a bit of exertion. If you're not used to biking, I'd suggest planning your excursions in one hour (?) segments, as your bum won't be used to sitting on a bike. And get gloves and a helmet. |
