Franconian Beer Message Board

searching for Franconian saisonal beers this weekend

Hello all, My wife and I are from Chicago, but living in Munich for the next 6 months. We have been to Bamberg once in the Summer and will visit again later in the Spring. But, this weekend we are heading to the Bamberg region specifically to seek out holiday and saisonal beers that will no be around a few months from now. Of special interest are Bocks and Weihnachts Beers, but also anyhing of interest available only around this time. I see from the thread that we should go to Abseits and get the Greiss Bock. We also plan to go to Mönshambach for their WeihnachtsBock (can this be had at pubs in Bamberg?) We have 3 days/nights to spend and would like to end each day somewhere with a high concentration of good beer. Given these goals, my questions to you local experts are: 1) Which pubs or breweries in the region (to the SW and to the East of Bamberg) are likely to have these beers we are seeking? 2) Besides the Greiss Bock, what other good local seasonals can be found in the pubs within Bamberg itself? 3) What liquor stores should we visit to find to best selection of Franconian beers to bring back to Munich? (where it is almost impossible to find any beer made outside Munich). To make my small contribution to the board regarding what I´ve found out about Munich area beers, I will say that Unionsbrau in Munich has some phenomenal unfiltered beers conditioned and served on gravity from the wood, including an exceptional Xmas Bock right now. Also, brewery Karg makes an excellent Helles Weizen-Bock that may be better than the also delicious Ayinger Weizen-Bock. Thanks in advance for any info. Thomas
