annafest questions

Glad you'll make it, Mike! Hope the weather cooperates too. I think all the beers are Festbier(s), though I'd not be surprised if the big ones (Wolfshöher & parent(?) brewer Tucher) are not specially brewed just for the Annafest. I've never tried either. I've heard rumo(u)rs that Neder just pours their Schwarze Anna as their Annafestbier. For me, the Annafest beers have been a crapshoot in the three years I've been. I can't really recall 2005 other than liking Neder's and Greif's and finding the Heb' to be somewhat nasty, but in 2006 the Greif was loaded with diacytel; I had to dump my 5+€ Mass out on the ground. Wretched, it was. I can't recall, but one other was at least lame, if not downright bad. (Probably Neder, as Chris notes.) You'll just have to try them all. Last year's smash hit was the Hebendanz. I've had awesome Hell at the pub too at times, but also butterscotchy crap. I don't go there any more, since they've closed up to become a smoker's club. I shan't boycott their Festbier though. Provided the beer is as good as last year's was. I've also had bad bottled Heb'. Krug's Festbier (perhaps also not brewed specifically JUST for the Annafest?) has been a bit sweet for me, simply lacking hop for its strength, I think. This is typical of their other beers though, aside from the wonderful (dunkle) Lager with its soft, chocolatey goodness. I'll try to remember to have this one first, before my palate gets wrecked by the others. Their Bock in winter is a bit sweet, their Pils undrinkably so (at least the bottles currently wasting space in my cellar)...I'd rather have their Lager at the Fest. They do officially sell Seidla as well though. I also like St. GB's Festbier better than their "Kellerbier", and the Löwenbräu is as good as one would expect, given their Kellerbier. Blümlein up at the top is just awesome, and they pour the nice enough "starter" Festbier from Eichhorn, whose Festbier has been the one constant of the 4 Forchheimers IME, if not a terribly exciting one. Somebody should really put together a better map/plan of the Keller(s), this is the "best" one I know of: http://www.forchheim.de/tourismus___freizeit/highlights_im_veranstaltungskalender/annafest/ (the downloadable pdf lists the Keller names) Chris is right--if they're not busy (go weekdays at noon), the Kellerdudes do seem to like showing their Keller off to suitably impressed foreigners & newcomers. When're you coming?
