Bergkirchweih in Erlangen...short pours! |

http://www.nn-online.de/artikel.asp?art=817824&kat=27&man=3 That's the shorter of two articles in the weekend paper about how the 1L fill lines of one of the various Masskrüge are too short. A guy, described as "meticulous", found that two bottles of beer at home filled the Krug he got "auf dem Berg" well over the 1L mark. The Eichamt (bureau of weights and measures) investigated and found that the problem isn't just with one Krug, but the majority of Krüge from this particular Keller have a "brewery-friendly" fill mark. Here's a map of the Fest with the various Keller(s): http://www.der-berg-ruft.de/index.php?navi=1&rid=7&artid=105 I think--I haven't gone and made concrete notes--"most" of the Keller(s) are tied to Tucher. (I've never tried a Tucher Bergkirchweihbier, I don't even know if it's a special Festbier or not.) I suspect that the Keller in question is a Tucher Keller, because the others are Kitzmann (Entla's Keller & another one), Mönschshofer (1), and Steinbach. I can rule out the former and latter, and since there's only one M'hofer Keller, you couldn't really describe its Krüge as "widely used". Another article went on to say that the Krüge for the local Steinbach brewery's Keller have the opposite "problem"--the fill line is a bit too high. The Braumeister says he's happy to serve festgoers a bit extra "on the house". Good, because the beer's actually decent. To get an idea of the fest grounds, try searching for "An den Kellern 5" at maps.google.de. The aerial photos were taken in the winter, so you can see the tables & benches at the bigger Keller(s) at the west end. It gives you an idea of how relatively packed in the Bergkirchweih is compared to the lovely, wandering Annafest layout. Searching for "Kellerwald, Forchheim" to compare will lead you to lesser quality photos, taken in summer, so you can't really see the Keller(s) at all. Why two prepositions are used to name the streets in question between Erlangen & Forchheim is a mystery--an den Kellern vs. auf den Kellern. I shall have to ask about this at school. Seriously though, for those who like big Bayerische Volksfeste (Chris!), then I say the Bergkirchweih is well worth seeking out. It does fall during Maibock season, anyway. I read also that Dirndl-wearing is becoming more popular "auf dem Berg", for those whose wives go in for that sort of thing (Chris again!), and for those who go in for their wives' going in for that sort of thing. |
