My jaw dropped when I heard about the "schnitt" in Franconia! I live in Grand Rapids Michigan and we have the same thing here! Most people here are of Dutch or Polish ancestory, but many Germans (like myself) as well. I have always thought this was a Polish tradition, since I mostly hear it used in Polish halls in the west side of Grand Rapids. I've even seen it spelled with a Polish slant. I saw a "sznit" (notice the more polish spelling) being offered for 50 cents at a Polish hall, although usually it means a FREE last few gulps of beer in your glass. Weird. Has anyone else heard of this outside of Franconia? |
