Hi everyone, My wife and I returned about 3 weeks ago from our two-week trip to Germany and the Czech Republic, where we spent two days in Bamberg. Well, the trip was wonderful, the beer was delicious, and I can't wait to go back. Since coming back home 3 weeks ago, I periodically have dreams that I am still in Bamberg, roaming around searching for yet another wonderful brewpub. I was particularly impressed with Bamberg's brown ales and lagers (Zwergla, Sternla, Braunbier), and Schlenkerla's rauchweizen hooked me! We had a wonderful stay at the Spezial, and only wished we could stay longer, especially as the clouds parted and the sun finally came out on our final morning there. One highlight of Bamberg was our final night, where we met four men from Munster at Mahr's and had a rollicking good time drinking and talking. They were very impressed by the beer culture tips I knew about-- when they saw I had set my krug on its side, they laughed and yelled "Look! he wants another!! (raucous laughter)." They gave us a brief culture lesson on the Franconians and their "Franconian first, Bavarian second" attitude. They also made sure that my wife and I understood that the kind of beer drinking you see in Bamberg (men in the pub at breakfast) was definitely a Franconian thing, and they wouldn't dream of having one before dinner in Munster. Good times. Munich was also nice, but a bit cosmopolitan and such. Still, the Augustiner Keller was a beautifully relaxing experience, as was riding bikes through the English Garden and enjoying weisswurst, currywurst, and Paulaner hefeweizens by the lake at Seehaus. I know it's not the forum for it, but I should say that the Czech Republic was also enchanting. The beer was more limited in choice, but much less expensive, and I loved the 3.8% Kozel dark that I could drink endlessly without getting sloshed. One of the freshest, hoppiest pilsners I enjoyed was from a small brewery unknown to me, dispensed at 7:30am at a music festival in Krasny Les, on a hillside in the north Czech Republic. I invite you all to take a look at our pictures, and feel free to add your comments! Thanks again.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/plastron/sets/ Also, special thanks to Fred for sharing his knowledge through his beer guide (the men from Munster got a kick out of it)... that guide was always by my side as I wandered the beautiful streets. |
