GPS

I only started trying GPS this year and decided to go cheap as I wasn't quite sure it would be helpful for hiking. So I bought a Magellan Explorist 100 without maps and pc connectivity. Price about 100 euros from a Swedish mailorder computer store. I used it for my annual walk along Cornwall's South West Coast Path and did find it helpful. For the first time I never lost my way. No maps may sound weird, but I find the ones with maps want you to walk on highways and possibly bike roads - they don't know about hiking paths. This means you have to do quite a bit of homework finding and loading coordinates. I use Google Earth to find those coordinates that Fred have not listed on this site. It is excellent with German addresses - for addresses like Nr. 24, 91347 Hochstahl you enter Hochstahl 24, 91347, Germany or Hochstahl 24, Hochstahl, Germany. The Explorist will list the closest breweries from where you are (provided you loaded their coordinates) and the direction and distance to each one. So even if you lost you way in the woods you will know in what direction to head through the bushes.
