| Tuesday, 15th May, from 17.15 - 17.45 in BR3. Nothing specific about *beer* in the description here: http://www.presseportal.de/pm/7560/984690/br_bayerischer_rundfunk but it might still be interesting to see our favorite town (right?) on tv. My translation: Bamberg is like a house with different floors. Seven hills with churchers, monasteries and fortresses are, like in Rome, connected to each other via kilometer-long underground passageways; the city's cellar, so to say. The gardens make up the ground floor, and the so-called "citizen's town" is found on the first floor (2nd in Yank terms), the "Belletage". The whole thing is crowned by --but no longer ruled by-- the Domberg, the stronghold of the Franconian Bishopric and its 1000 years of history. Picturesque stairways lead up and down. The borders between the once strictly arranged hierarchies in historic Bamberg become indistinct in everyday life today, and it's the self-aware citizens who take to the Domberg on holidays and Sundays. The young student population stream through the alleys of the old city which was spared from war. A lively university has arisen again, after its grounding more than 350 years ago, a famous orchestra, the Bamberger Symphoniker, "immigrated" after 1945. A one-of-a-kind "cultural sanctuary" upon which UNESCO bestowed the title "World Cultural Heritage". |
