| I haven't tasted it this year. Last year the rumor among the locals (including a couple of brewers) was that it was a blend of the unsmoked lagerbier and the Ur-Bock. I don't think this was true, but it perfectly describes the beer: a bit stronger and less smokey than the normal Märzen. After a couple of mugs, I went back to the Märzen. If you like the smokiness of Märzen then the Fastenbier tastes a little weak. If you don't like the smoke, it probably is still too much. When I first heard that a new beer was coming, I had kind of hoped it might be a pale (unsmoked) bock. About the blending rumor: They now brew the book year round for the export (i.e. US) market. My guess is somebody wondered where all this bock was going and put two and two together and got 5 :) |
