Another Franconian PA - and "Craft" beer rant
Posted by Mark Andersen on 2013-10-03 07:43:02
Count me as one of the American beer drinkers that really appreciates the traditional beer styles of Franconia and the delicacy of British Ales.  In fact I'm going to a cask ale festival in Portland, Maine tomorrow to hopefully enjoy plenty of both.  Not that I don't occasionally enjoy a hoppy American style pale ale from time to time it's just I get sick of them really quickly.  The IPA craze in the so-called "craft" beer industry over here has really gotten ridiculous.  Some of these beers are just so overly hopped that they're heart burn inducing.  I don't consider that enjoyable.  And the marketing bullshit has just gotten completely out of hand.  Long Trail in Vermont just came out with their "Farmhouse" series (brewed in a commerical industrial park type building of course) that consists of "White IPA", "Black IPA", "Session IPA", and "American IPA".  Seriously?  "Farmhouse White IPA"?!?!  I want to choke somebody!

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of really nice breweries that have sprung up over here in the past decade that are brewing some really nice beers so I can't complain too much.  Just lay off the word "Farmhouse" and the "IPA" acronymn please and brew a damn Bitter with some balance and EKG hops for crying out loud!  At my local pub I drink more Fullers London Pride than anything.  You'd think one of the local breweries could lay off the hops just enough to produce something similar so I don't have to pay exhorbitant prices for a balanced ale from across the Atlantic.

Anyhow enough of that rant.

I don't bregrudge a Franconian brewery from doing a pale ale as long as they don't replace their traditional style with it or lose focus on it.  I love the vollbier from Drei Kronen in Schesslitz.  I would try the PA from there out of curiousity but I'd hate to see what they really do well fall by the wayside as a result.  My first visit to Franconia was an inspiration to me as a homebrewer and beer drinker.  I didn't realize lager could be that good.
