Bürgerbusse

Since I'm often on the look-out for new means of transport in Germany, I found this very interesting overview (in English) of something I've run across, but never really looked into before: http://is.gd/DM3VfC Basically, the idea is citizens transporting other citizens. This is a service to supplement commercial taxis and, in some cases, buses. Since many of these services are offered via local transport companies, the costs for what is basically a shared taxi often traveling door-to-door is a little more than a bus fare. These services can often be found on bus schedules, and are usually called "AST" (Anruf-Sammel-Taxi) In some areas of Franconia, buses to outlying areas are often school buses: they arrive there early morning and return mid-afternoon. Hardly ideal for beer tourists. Anyway, in a chart on the page I referenced, there is something called "kiss and ride". That sounds like something most of us could afford.
