| I should've also explained that we pack along our pillows (Kopfkissen) and a queen-sized top-sheet these days when we travel. The former because we just can't stand the gigantic 3-foot-thick Eurohotelpillows and sleep better with our own. The latter because we can't stand duvets, especially the silly, marriage-unfriendly, twin duvets that continental hotels have. So that all takes up some luggage space. (And let's not get started on the ridiculous twin mattresses pushed together to make a "double" bed.) In the US, OTOH, we had to take along a hand-held shower head (Brause) (and a pliers to install it) when we travelled, since showers in that savage land normally have heads fixed to the wall, preventing one from getting oneself properly cleaned and rinsed. AFA the hassle of dealing with checked baggage goes, well, we're lucky, I guess, as we've never had a bag lost on a European flight. And we use 2-part backpacks, not hard-shell suitcases, so carrying them around is a non-issue. I can't find ours (bought 10+ years ago) on the website, I suppose Columbia Sportswear has discontinued them. (We *used* to be able to take them as carry-on, now only the smaller day-pack half!) Hard to imagine that going shopping for clothes is less time-consuming than checking in and picking up a piece of luggage. When I travel somewhere for just a few days though, then I can fit everything in a carry-on. |
