'Twas meant to be a little tongue in cheek but you do need more than a mouthful. Remembering back to the delightful afternoon tasting the prodcuts of Bruel's Brewery, I do recall my critical faculties diminished rather in the final samples. I was somewhat amazed by the plethora of categories - surely pale ale is... pale ale, like IPA is surely IPA. When it becomes so different as to be categorised as American IPA or whatever, it should have a different name. Incidentally, how do you distinguish between a Cascades-heavy hoppy pale ale and an American IPA? Actually, in my memory, there never was much difference between pale ale and bitter. Fine differences were really due to individual brewery recipes. Most pale ales in my lifetime were bottled beers, I don't really recall much in the way of draught pale ales, excepot the few draught IPA's, mainly from the Burton breweries.
