Careful with that "In the US" generalization. In my neck o' the woods, no, we say "pale" when we mean modern-style pale ales, and use "amber" and "red" for more ruddy-hued brews. And yes, I've seen "bernsteinfarbiges" used for "amber-colored [beer]" as well. For instance, from Austria's biggest brewing concern: Scroll down to the description of Edelweiss Hofbräu to see "bernsteinfarben" used as an adjective.
