Keesmann does have some nice hop flavor, but I've grown less impressed by it in the last couple of years. FWICRecall of König--it's been a long time--it's fairly Bitburger-like. Competent and decent, but not a real standout. I'm surprised Jever isn't bigger in the US. I don't recall ever having had Flensburger, but I believe it's at the Fränky Getränke shop nearest me. And yeah, I probably said the words "Northern German Pils" twice in my several years of being a Yank homebrewer myself(*). I suppose I'm recalling BJCP and/or AHA style guidelines. Hmmm... http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style02.php has nothing about northern varieties, nor does http://www.beertown.org/education/pdf/BA_Beer_Style_2009.pdf (page 20), but I have found http://hbd.org/prisoner/newsletters/2000/PCB200006.pdf (page 2-3) cite going back to 2000, which has the category 2B I'm thinking of. Funny, look at the "commercial examples" of "northern" Pils--Bitburger, Kulmbacher, Jever, Holsten, and Paulaner. And the current AHA (Beertown.org) guidelines are amusing as ever in their choice of category breakdown. There's no seperate "northern Pils", but Jeebus--nowadays there are "International" and "Australasian Pale Ale" (?) in addition to the bewildering categories of American ales...and what's this--Keller- and Zwickelbier *Ale*? Who's brewing that then? They've got room enough to break down "Bamberg-Style Rauchbier" into 3 categories--as opposed to Forchheimer-Style Rauchbier, I guess, but lump Zwickel- and Kellerbier together, as if they were the same thing. (*I was an APA/IPA guy myself, and one of my IPAs scored 45 at a competition, with Hair Of The Dog's brewmaster having low-balled it at 40 points. I would never have brewed a lager, though since I was in the same club as Curt Hausam, I could've counted on expert help if I had.)
