When the new double-decker RE trains with cockpits in the lead & end cars were delivered a couple of years ago, you could watch the driver through the glass door and window. It was quite cool, especially the electronic gages showing torque, amperage, etc., during acceleration and braking. Then they all decided to pull the curtains down, so now you can normally only peek through the gaps in the curtains--if you're inclined to watch the action at 160 kph, that is. Or if you're lucky, you can ask the driver to raise the curtain and he'll oblige, but usually they won't. Also, the new 300+ kph line to München is also used by some RE trains going 200 (or 250?) kph. These aren't the same RE's, but IC trains, IIRC, running the RE schedule. You can usually watch through the cockpit in these too, up in the bike car. Very cool going through the tunnels. And the new driverless U3 and U2 trains in Nürnberg are pretty cool too, but the lighting is so bright that it's tough to see out into the darkness. It makes commuting to work fun.
