| I encountered something of a revelation today. Someone in a FB group was suggesting that the Spezial U was slightly smoky. I responded and said that it isn't smoked. I don't know why, but I've always had it in my head that it isn't smoked and yet people seemed to think they could detect low levels of smoke. I have no idea what the view was on here, but it can't have been strong or else I would have been corrrected. I went to the brewery earlier to pick up some U (I had wanted to get some anyway) and asked Florian if they use the same yeast. He said yes and that some people do indeed detect low level smoke. Upon my arrival home I poured myself a seidla and it hit me in the face - it reminded me very much of the Schlenkerla Lager. I think most people here know that the lager gets it's smoke from the yeast (would love to learn the science if anyone knows). There was some nonsense going around that it was the equipment but that's clearly rubbish (sorry). Was this common knowledge that I somehow missed? I knew that they didn't use smoked malt. Seems obvious now. |
