| Was this before or after you sent me the picture of the Krug of Neder bier celebrating my new acquistion on FB? In a slightly related matter, but one that may suggest a particularly German sensitivity to privacy or fear of litigation, a few year's ago, you were kind enough to contact my future hosts in Ebensfeld for me, as they didn't seem to have an email address (or didn't reply to emails, I can't remember which, now). You suceeded our friend Nick in this role, as he had contacted a number of different hosts for me before you arrived in Franken. At that time, only half a dozen or so years ago, email connections to Germany were really tricky - I remember that few (if any?) Ferienwohnen allowed internet access for visitors (this was before the days when we all had Smartphones/I-phones with mobile data). The explanation (from I don't remember who - maybe Nick?) was that there was a law that made providers of internet access (such as Fewo hosts) responsible for the actions of people using said internet connection. Thus, if I committed some crime involving use of that internet connection, then the hosts/providers were jointly responsible for the crime. Then again, German people were (not sure whether this is still the case) very reluctant to use their debit/credit cards for shopping. It was (and may still be) common practice for everybody to pay cash in supermarkets. Similarly, it was impossible to buy a ticket at a DB auto using a normal bankcard - you had to have a DB card. The same was the case with our beloved VGN but this has now changed, thank goodness, as I remember stuffing endless quantities of Euro into machines to buy our Mobicards! |
