I would question the 'healthier' statement - sure, drinking alcohol is bad for you, if you aren't careful (or unlucky - some people clearly can drink more than they should for their whole life and die at a reasonable age of unrelated causes). But i would look at it in the round, not so simply. Beer has played a huge roll in my adult life. Without it I may not have the same love of travel, wouldn't have been to half of the places i have, wouldn't have met half the people and would have half the memories (ok i lost a few on the way too). I wouldn't have moved to Germany and I wouldn't have met a number of very important people in my life. Of course, I could have taken a different path with similar results, but the point is that beer for me is more than something i drink. Today, a few seidlas in Spezial on a week day evening is something i really enjoy and allows me to be social and not be stuck inside watching television. Sometimes i don't speak to anyone but I have the choice. Had i moved to Bamberg without a love of beer (pretty ridiculous given i wouldn't have even come here in the first place), i would find the place very difficult to be a part of. It has encouraged me to travel alone, be at peace with my own company and meet new people - in that respect, it's extremely healthy. To be honest, if something needs reinventing, it's generally because it wasn't working beforehand. We are all different, but i'm not someone that abandones (or takes on) whims or phases in my life - if it's worth being there it's worth keeping, otherwise I'm wasting my time. It means that a decision like moving here was not a whim; I knew it was what i needed to do, and 19 months down the line it couldn't have gone better. Sure, we can always improve, and I need to drink less, but right now it wouldn't make me happier. So what is healthy? I'm not going to pour away my whole beer just because a fly landed in it - when that time comes, I'll drink less, but not lose my enthusiasm. Perhaps I should wait until middle age before making any final conclusions though... |
