And now I'm the subject of gossip? :) I don't drink a lot while driving around Franconia or Oberpfalz. I plan my days to drive out to 2-3 breweries over about 6 hours. I always order a kleines of a new or unknown beer, and these day-time visits are about sampling new breweries and broadening my notes on Franconian beer. A majority of these are not worth a full glass, and a lot of time can be spent with 25 centiliters of an OK to good beer. If a place has bottles and tap I will sample and rate 1-2 from tap and buy bottles of some or all of the rest, depending on the quality of what I try. You guys assume that I drink mugs of everything, I save seidla's for the Really Fucking Good Franconian lagers, and I plan where I stay around my favorites (Hoehn, Knoblach, Witzgall, Roppelt) so I don't drive at night. Having a car allows me to sample a wider set of breweries, talk to more brewers, and collect more bottles. While out driving you sometimes find a GEM of a beer and you settle in for an hour or two with a full glass, or you make plans to come back with more time. By the evenings we are back to the hotel, in a village around Bamberg where excellent lager is available by foot. I've driven thousands of miles in Germany with no accidents and no problems. My pro-tip is to pay extra for a good German car, preferrably BMW, and avoid the cheap-o European brands like Skoda. These cars are FUN to drive. Just maybe cut down on the number of Maßkrug you're throwing back? |
