Dogs in pubs

I don't think that I mentioned anything about hygiene - all I said that there was 'no dogs'.  This was actually a kind of self-regulation by the customers.  There was plenty of room for dogs in the bar, so why not have a dog-free room.  But while we're talking about hygiene regulations and, not forgetting your remark about dogs and b & b's:

Regulations (EC) No 852/2004, Annex II, Chapter IX – Provisions applicable to foodstuffs (4) as below:

Adequate procedures are to be in place to control pests. Adequate procedures are also to be in place to prevent domestic animals from having access to places where food is prepared, handled or stored (or, where the competent authority so permits in special cases, to prevent such access from resulting in contamination).

There was actually a lot of discussion about this matter a few years as most b & b's in the UK were family run in their own homes and, of course, family dogs often live in the kitchen.  Anyway..

You have to consider the situation from the point of view of the pub owner.  Simple economics: about 9 m people in the UK own dogs (about the largest percentage in the EU), which leaves about 50 m who don't (though many may be part of a family - estimated at around 25% of population, which still leaves a lot of families where there are no dogs).  So let's say that of the rest, a third wouldn't want dogs in pubs, another third might be ambivalent (i.e. not minding a little dog but objecting to a pit bull, rottweiler, etc) and the final third happy to have dogs in pubs (I don't have any figures, just applying a little guesswork).  As a pub owner, would you want to potentially alienate many millions of possible customers for the sake of the few who want to bring in their dogs, cats, rats, snakes or other pets (incidentally, I've never seen anyone bring a cat into a pub, though many pubs own cats).

If you have any business sense, you try to satisfy all desires by offering different facilites for different folks.  So, rooms where you can bring dogs etc., and rooms where they will be excluded.  But, if you don't have that option, you pays your money, you takes your choice!
