Very interesting. So people are actually PROSECUTED for brewing 'beer' that doesnt fit with the Reinheitsgebot? How does this fit with EU law? I suppose its admirable that these people want their beer traditions to be preserved, after all, in the UK we nearly lost our beer forever in the 1970s. However, there surely has to be a little room for flexibility here.
Funnily enough, I was musing on this last night. We were in a craft beer pub and I was perusing their botted beer menu, when I noticed a 'Mango Lassi Gose'. Is this 'beer'? Similarly my local was selling a 'Chocolate Orange IPA' a few weeks ago. I certainly wouldnt want to stop people brewing or drinking this stuff, but it did set me thinking at what stage something would stop being beer, and become say a malt-based alcoholic drink with chocolate/mango/tea/yoghurt?
