I know about using the same yeast 42 times in the homebrewing, also no acid washing etc (just pure water). The beer was superb even after that time (as this person is really a master :-) ) For me Whitelabs / Wyeast is still an expensive option. First, it is not easy to get here (unless you want to pay shipping from Germany), second, it really increases total costs. Btw, regarding the 5 cent beer, this is my calculation for 12° american pale ale ( ABV 5%) and 30L batch: 3 € malt 4 € hops (american hops are expensive) 16 € yeast (2 packs) if using WhiteLabs, or 3 € if using dry yeast, or 0 € if using yeast from previous batch + some water, energy, equipment + a lot of time as you could see , cost for just malt and hops is about 7 US cents for 0.5 L which is close to the desired 5 cents per 12 oz :-) At least for "lagers" I always use bottom-cropped beers (either from my previous batch, or from some local brewery), for "ales" top-cropped from previous batch or dryied. |
