I say he was the godfather of east coast US microbrewing (what die Kinder call "craft" these days), whereas Fritz Maytag and Fullers were the grandfathers of west coast US brewing. PA's Ringwood systems sprang up in the east, whereas Anchor & Sierra Nevada defined western brewing. (Maytag created his own beer in Liberty, SN emulated F ESB with Yankohops in SNPA.) Beer brewed at "Ringwood" breweries in the US are (were?) commonly derided for their "dirty socks" character, whereas the real English Ringwood beer I've had (Black Bull behind Manc Piccadilly!) has been just fine and clean, if not amazingly wow-y. |
