| So, the big question is...IS IT CRAFT?!??! Seriously, the back-and-forth about what is or isn't "craft" beer in England is hilarious to Yank lovers of good beer. And then there's the question of whether cask beer (AKA Real Ale by CAMRA) even can be "craft beer", which has nearly caused me to tear my abdomen muscles in laughter. Silly English kids these days. The argument seems to be that "craft beer" in the UK is simply "non-traditional" beer. So, with Fuller's being a traditional, old, family-run brewery rather than a new micro- or picobrewery, they can't be a so-called "craft" brewery. This, despite the fact that the entire "craft" brewery hysteria in the US originated mostly from Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, which was basically an attempt to brew something like ......wait for it...... Fuller's ESB using American/Californian ingredients. I can't imagine an American beer geek *not* thinking of Fuller's, Robinson's, Sheperd Neame, or even Greene King as "craft" beer. And now we have German kids wanting to define "Craft Bier" to *EXCLUDE* the likes of Roppelt's Kellerbier, Witzgall Landbier, and Held Dunkel because they are *traditional* breweries, not "craft" breweries. But a microbrewery in the US making the equivalent would be the epitome of "craft"! Idiotic nonsense, all of it. Just call it all "beer" and discuss the specifics of what sort of beer it is you're talking about, like I've been saying for 20 years or so. Anyway, 5.3% is *perfect* for a good IPA. It's when you get over 5.5% or so that the malt and alcohol compete too much with the hops and make a bloody mess of things. (Still too strong for me though, you're right!) I think I've had Fuller's IPA a couple of times, and yes, for a good, traditional, English-hopped "EIPA", you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one. And if you see their Porter, buy it! |
