Spezial U, Prima Pils, Water, Complaining about Mahr's |

Very interesting comparison. As I've said, I've never found Spezial U to be yeasty, let alone have a yeast bite. It's lagered too long for this, at least the batches I've enjoyed. Can't say I agree with you on Victory Prima though: it's not a good Pils, since it is too strong, hoppy, and dirty. Pils should be under 5%, light and dry in the mouth, and yes, hoppy, but these are American hopping rates. I actually love Prima, except that it's too strong for proper enjoyment...sessionability as the kids say today. Bring it down to 4% and I'd start up a business to import it to Europe. AFA complaining about Mahr's goes, your comment about minerals brings something to mind. When I tagged along on a tour of Mahr's a few years ago, I asked Braumeister Stephan about the water, and how it compared to water up in the fränkischen Schweiz. My point was, I find beers up there to be more "mineraly" than Bamberger beers, for example Aufsesser Pils (I think that was one I brought up, can't remember for sure). His response: "I don't know, I'm not interested in any other breweries." But it was also a bit dismissive in tone, you know, as in, his beer's already been proclaimed "best in the world", so why *should* he care? |
