> hops that have been processed in some way, either by kiln drying or by pelletising I think this is where we've got hung up in our discussions. You seemed to be suggesting that pelletised hops are not already dried. This is simply not the case. Here's how it works. Wet hops are either sold as wet/fresh, or they are dried/kilned. Then the dried hops are either sold as whole/leaf hops, or they are further processed into pellets, pastes, oil extracts, or who-knows what else, which are then sold. This means, the closest thing to natural, un-dried, wet/fresh hops are dried whole hops, whereas pellets are another, much more extreme, step away from the ideal fresh stuff. Yes, malting my own grain would be a bit impractical; I do, however, personally drive up to Weyermann and buy my malt directly from the amazingly aromatic logistic centre there, rather than have it delivered, and at a higher price than I'd pay from a retailer. Some homebrewers smoke their own malts. (I practically shudder to think how much better the Moor Top would be if he were to use leaf hops. I'd have to move to Buxton!) |
