Aye, friends. July/August seems to be an awful time to visit Cornwall. Invasion time indeed. I've been there for the first time and must say, it is not comparable to Wales or Scotland: No cornish music played in any pub, densely inhabited, many english settlers. Of course it has breathtaking coastlines etc. and I took more than 200 pictures (analog!). I was really surprised by the huge effort they do to bring back the cornish language into everyday life. Maybe that answers your question, Nick: No, the Cornish don't consider themselves as being English. They're celtic and heavily related to the Welsh and Breton people, speaking a P-celtic tongue up to the 18th century: Kernewek. As soon as you reach the Devon/Corwall border, the sign says: "Welcome to Cornwall - Kernow a'gas dynergh". Nearly all the street signs are bilingual now. Well, for my next holidays I surely go to Scotland again. But being interested in good beers, Cornwall's a very very good place. Cheers. J. |
