Although I think the idea is pretty good, the Witzgall keller practice suggests that the index of places selling by BA might be a little compromised. As I understand it, the concept was to publicise those places that sold their beers as nature intended, i.e. not with added gas. However, if the list is going to include places that regularly 'gas up' their casks, it really renders the idea fairly pointless. Perhaps people might indicate that this practice takes place when they suggest places for the BA list. My fellow countrymen (and women) with long memories may recall a similar 'controversy' in Camra about cask breathers and blanket CO2. I was intrigued by Gerhard's comment that some beer outlets used bulk storage tanks. I remember well this practice in the UK from working in a pub in Leeds in the mid-1970s. Awful pasteurised beer pumped up from the cellar using CO2. |
