Cask Ales in Ireland |

I spoke to one pub manager (forget which one) about the difficulties with cask ales. It is pretty much the same thing I hear in the US: Customers call it "Warm, flat, cloudy beer" :) Plus it is more work for the pub (and the brewery) than kegs, so less incentive unless there is a customer demand. Once a certain critical mass is achieved it becomes easier. My "local" in LA (well, Santa Monica actually -- The Daily Pint) actually has four hand pumps (with cask breathers) but it is rare that there are more than 2 on at any time, and then 90% of the beers are from Stone. There is the occasional Firestone-Walker and that is about it. There was a local brewery that specialized in English style cask ales but they owner burned out and they stopped brewing. |
