The problem with all those little breweries - indeed, every brewery in Freistaat Bayern/Franken/etc - is that tradition isn't working well for many of them. Summed up in this, from Frankenpost: If it weren't for the export trade and the increase in non-alcohol beers (fie! abomination!), there would be even more brewhouse lights going out for good than there are already. That one place we used to bust a gut to get to may not even be there next time, and in some cases, that's a terrible bloody shame. Mind you, I'm not sure experimenting a bit is going to help much. The downtrend in Germany is largely driven by demographics, and they aren't about to change any time soon.
