Biking in Franconia

I strongly doubt it was a train line because in most places it was too narrow for tracks. You are absolutely correct that it is indeed a lovely stretch. Actually, on my iPhone I use PocketEarth (highly recommended over all their competitors) which does use Openstreetmaps and I don't see any indication of topography (and, I don't see it on the webpage on my PC either, am I missing something?) Limburg province here (where Maastricht is located) is quite hilly. Domestically, it is known as "the Dutch Alps". Perhaps that tells you something. In Ebermannstadt, we stayed at Sonne, where lodging, food and beer are all of high standard. Unfortunately, the second night, their restaurant was invaded by about 200 young people, taking every seat in the place. Fortunately, they (the brewery/hotel/restaurant) and the weather were accommodating and we ate on the terrace in front. Thoroughly enjoyable.
