Fact is, quite a few smaller American craft/micro brewing operations are doing a lager or two, Pilsners included, with IBUs ranging from 25 to 40. Modern mass-market German Pilsners are pretty much pegged at 25 IBU, 4.8 to 5.0% ABV. I recently had a tasty Pilsner brewed at a local brewpub a couple of days last week: 35 IBU, 4.9% ABV. Anyone recall a discussion about a show on German Channel 2 (ZDF) recently, where the Germans were lamenting that their own beers, supposedly definitive representations of style, were no longer doing well in blind-judging against non-German equivalents? World Beer Cup 2012 might just have been a wake-up call ... maybe. |
