It's not much of a minefield, but with one caveat: it's super-helpful to be able to speak and understand German. I bought a stick at the Tchibo in "market Oberfranken Einkaufszentrum," on the east side of Hallstadt, between the Brose plant and the A70 Autobahn. I was on the phone with a support tech for a little bit to get the thing activated and working (ergo the need to speak German), then was on my way. It worked splendidly for the remainder of my trip. I still have it and am now wondering what I'd need to do to renew/recharge it for another three-week trip, or failing that, maybe I'll just go buy another one. The price is certainly not a deterrent. There was never a problem with network coverage or signal strength, and I was able to use it elsewhere. BTW, this isn't Wi-Fi, but rather an adaptation of 3G/UMTS technology that allows digital network data transfer, isn't it? If I could find a similar device for my Motorola Xoom Android tablet, bonus - or, FTM, if a surf stick can be made to act like a WLAN box, that would work too. Clearly, More Research Is Indicated. |
