| Well, that site you mentioned (rot-13.com) is for sale now. About balance: I don't see it as a fixed and narrow point. It is a range - perhaps a fixed point +/- 10 percent. Secondly, for those people who still value a balanced beer, that range can vary, probably by quite a bit. I have a problem calling a beer "bad" because I don't like it. I might say it is unbalanced or it is bland or has some unpleasant flavours, etc. I've had a couple of the beers you listed and I quite liked them. I didn't think they were badly made at all. This, obviously, is a question of personal taste. I know Fritz. I think he is a clever guy. Much like de Struise in Belgium, Brewdog in Scotland and a few breweries here in the Netherlands, he sees a business opportunity and he's jumped in with both feet. There is a reason that there is only one Fritz in Germany - it's a tiny market and one brewery is apparently enough to fill it. In an interview with him linked by Jan, he called German beer boring. The interview read like something you'd find on RateBeer or BeerAdvocate. The best American beer I've had recently is from Moonlight brewery in California. The owner/brewer's daughter was studying at Utrecht university (where my daughter is now) and he came to visit her. He stopped in Amsterdam with a small crate of sample beers and I thought they were very well made and quite enjoyed them. Yes, Brooklyn has made some good beers, but I can't buy any here, so I'm not really current on their products. What you wrote about "half-IPAs" (not sure what that means) is, I don't think innovation at all. I suspect the hopping rate was even higher many years ago, though using local or Continental hops. And, I wouldn't be surprised if other ingredients have also changed over the years. |
