OT: Driving...and....

I've driven in German many times and, generally, found it quite easy and safe - bearing in mind, of course, that, like most of the rest of the world, the wheel is on the wrong side of the car! Two journies that I haven't enjoyed both involved that horrible autobahn (can't remember it's number), part of which serves as the E1. We drove in a minature Peugot (the one with a sliding door, which drew crowds whenever we parked) from Krefeld to Bamberg (our first visit). For a lot of the way, the autobahn was only two-lane and, as the Peugot was so underpowered, most of it was spent between massive tricks on the inside lane. When I did venture out to try to pass, I quickly realised that the speck in the rear mirror was a high speed projectile driven with no apparent concern for the driver's life - or ours. Were we glad to get off that track. Another time, I drove a truck from Bath to Bucharest, using the same route down to the Austrian border at Passau (where self and co-driver got fined DM 50 each for exceeding the speed limit - by about 5 kph! It wasn't the most enjoyable drive but at least the truck gave you a degree of security. In the last couple of years, we've had the pleasure of being whisked around rural Franken by our good friends Don and Cherie - most relaxing and enjoyable and definitely the way to travel!
