OT: A New Pale Ale in Bavaria |

The modern Goslarer Gose is pleasantly lemony and mildly tart. If you want out-and-out sour, the Döllnitzer Ritterguts is the way to go. Or ... try the Gose and Berliner-style Weisse beers made on the USA's west coast. Not a joke. I had Bear Republic's Berliner-style yesterday evening. Not a hint of sweetness, just tart, and really good with Mexican food. The Bruery is also doing a good Berliner-style Weisse. A local brewery in Seattle, Epic Ales, is doing a range of sours, including Gose, and Cascade Brewery of Portland, Oregon is doing a range of Gose-style beers as well. The thing is, Berliner Weisse has really fallen out of fashion in its home region. People prefer standard Pils instead, and the local breweries oblige. Germany's biggest domestically-owned brewing concern, Radeberger Gruppe, has made tough decisions in shutting down increasingly marginal and unprofitable operations, but there's no reason that one of Berlin's increasing number of new-breed brewpubs could make one ... no reason, that is, except that they simply prefer not to, because it's a hard sell. |
