| Think we had some of this discussion before. Racking my meagre brain for all the various synonyms, in my time in the UK, 'real-ale' or 'cask conditioned' could be called draught, handpumped (though some pubs use electric pumps to the same effect), gravity or from the barrel. No one talks about what the barrel/cask/keg is made of because everyone, with the exception of Wadworth's and maybe a couple of small breweries, use steel or alloy containers. Anything that uses gas as propellant would be called 'keg beer'. It's a bit tricky when the terms are applied in Franken because, although the beer is propelled by gas in most cases, as was pointed out by Jimbo, it is usually only filtered and not pasteurised, so is not like a British 'keg' product. I don't think that there is a verb that describes the act of dispensing 'keg' beer, as opposed to 'hand-pulled' - probably because no one talks about it! I never heard the term 'drawn' (as used in the US?) until I encountered this forum. Not sure what word could be used to describe the process in such as Eschawo, where the beer is lagered under a light CO2 blanket, no filtered or pasteurised, and dispensed using CO2. Don't think there is any problem with the last paragraph. |
