Bamberg Trip Report - the first weekend

I have not had a chance to post much, but today I have some time, so I thought I would summarize some of my activities over the previous week. 15-Jul-11. Last Friday Mark Andersen and I drove out from Bamberg to Zoigl Land (thanks again to Mark for driving). On the way we stopped in Pottenstein. We visited Brauerein Mager and Hufeisen. I really liked the Helles Lager at Mager. Eventually we arrived in Windischeschenbach and checked in at the Hotel Oberpfälzer Hof (nice hotel, no a/c, no elevator, no Wifi in the room but free wifi in the Gaststaette). Our first stop was the open Zoigl Stube in town, Schlosshof. It was a nice place, and since it was a lovely day, we sat in the Garten. The beer was very nice: on the red side of amber with Munich malt notes in the flavor and noticeeable hops; unfiltered and hazy/cloudy; very drinkable. We also ate some delicious Rippchen and listened for a time to some Oompa music from inside the building. After 4 hours and many a Zoiglbier, we made the walk across the river and up the huge hill to Neuhaus. We found our way to the open Stube, Kaeck'n. We were seated by the Braumeister, who we later learned had been a Braumeister for 38 years. We were served alternately by him, his wife, his daughter, and his grandson. Later we met his son, who is a Butcher as well as working at the Stube. Many locals joined our table over the evening, and we had a great time, not leaving until almost 3 am! Luckily the son gave us a ride back to our hotel. The Bier at Kaeck'n was similar to Schlosshof, though a touch less red in color, perhaps. Overall, a wonderful visit to Windischeschenbach & Neuhaus! 16-Jul-11 Saturday found us sleeping late, though I did make it down to breakfast before it ended at 10 am. We set off for Neuendettelsau sometime after 11 am to meet Juergen (and his wife and his friend Elmar, our driver for the day). We checked in at Hotel Gasthof Sonne (nice hotel, elevator, no a/c, roomy shower). Around 1 pm we set off on our Bier Tour. Our first stop was Dinkelsbuehl. Wow, a beutiful walled city, and we happened to be there on a day celebrating the saving of the city during the 30 Years War. We saw a parade/reenactment of the Swedish troops entering the city with the Mayor in chains. Cool. As for beer, we stopped at Weib's Brauhaus and then at Brauerei Hauf (Gaststaette Zum Wilden Mann). Our next stop on the tour was Brauerei Fuernheim in Wassertrüdingen am Hesselberg. Had a nice unfiltered Helles and a "Rot Bier" Dunkles, and also had a nice meal with some tasty house-made bratwurst. We then made a drive up to the top of the Hesselberg for some amazing views of the region (alas, the Alps were not visible on this day). Our final stop was at Wettelsheimer Keller. Quite a nice Keller with a scenic view, and with a tasty Maerzen. After a Mass of Maerzen, we set off to Vestenberg, but found the brewery there already closed (10 pm), sot that was the end of our night. Thanks to Juergen and Elmar for arranging this! That is enough for now, and I will make another post covering the last two days in the Fraenkische Schweiz.
