Anything near Munich?

Munich? Boring? I guess, if you say so. Helles isn't terribly exciting as a style, but there's more to Munich beer than that. Unfortunately, one of the best local beer options, the Forschungsbrauerei's cozy pub, isn't open in winter months. But if you like wheat beers, the Weisses Brauhaus is still worthwhile, even if the brewery has long since moved out of town to Kelheim. Munich's suburban S-Bahn trains will take you to other good places, though. If you haven't been to Aying yet, go! Both of the places there - the "pubby" Liebhard's Bräustüberl and the rather upmarket Ayinger Braugasthof - pour plenty of the local brewery's beer, and the Ayinger brewery has a good range on. If the weather isn't too rough, you could also take the S-Bahn out to Herrsching and hike (or if you're lucky, catch a bus, or just take a taxi) to Kloster Andechs. There's also a "country-style" brewery-pub in Herrsching, Mühlfelder Brauhaus, if you're in the mood. Another S-Bahn takes you north, all the way out to Freising, where Weihenstephan is just one of the breweries in town; from Freising, you can catch a train to Landshut, home to both Widmann and Landshuter breweries. If you want to leave the region anyway, head east to Salzburg. The local Stiegl brewery runs the Brauwelt museum, and of course there are beer-drinking opportunities after you're done with the museum visit. The local Augustiner brewery and beer hall shares only the name with the Munich brewer; the brewery is a classic, and the beer is served on gravity dispense from the barrel. If this isn't enough, there's the local "Die Weisse" brewpub, specialized in wheat beers. Another worthwhile train ride would take you to Regensburg, and this time of year, the obvious destination is either of the two Kneitinger pubs for the Bock. The local Fürstliches Brauhaus brewpub is interesting (brewer of the oddest stout beer I've ever tasted), and a stop in at the Spitalgarten's Gaststube isn't a bad idea at all.
